Health Insurance for Jeepney Drivers

Upon the implementation of strict quarantine guidelines, public transportation had to halt operations as people were required to stay at home. Jeepney drivers all over the country, most especially in Metro Manila, were heavily affected. Stopping their day-to-day operations meant cutting off their main source of income.

While some may have successfully resorted to other jobs or forms of livelihood, many were left jobless, still clinging to the hope that they will be able to drive again. Many drivers were gradually seen going back to the streets not to drive but to ask for donations in despair to sustain the needs of their families. This increased their risk of contracting the virus that already ruined their livelihood.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their livelihood and made them vulnerable to a highly contagious disease that could also potentially impose a heavy financial burden for medical expenses. Most of them do not really have funds for emergency medication or hospitalization, not even for the necessary annual medical check-up.

To spare displaced jeepney drivers from this agony, the Rotaract Club of San Francisco Del Monte Malaya Achievers thought of providing them security in the form of health insurance. This was accomplished through the project “Rotadyip: Proteksyong Pangkalusugan Sukli sa Muling Pag-arangkada.” Rotadyip was coined from the combination of terms “Rotaract” and “Dyip” or short for Jeepney.

In partnership with Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers and its Foundation, the Rotaract Club awarded health insurance policies to 77 jeepney drivers who are members of the Pasang Masda Balara-Katipunan Jeepney Operators Drivers Association (Pasang Masda BK JODA). The turnover of policies was conducted last December 13, 2020. Cebuana Lhuillier group, Hearty Bread, and Link further supplemented the initiative with the donation of noche buena packages for the drivers.

The premiums of the insurance policies provided were funded through an online donation drive launched by the Rotaract Club and supported by its sponsoring Rotary Club of San Francisco Del Monte.

The individual driver insurance package includes more than Php 150,000 worth of insurance

coverage for accidental death, disablement, and dismemberment; permanent total disability; murder and unprovoked assault. It also comes with accident medical reimbursement, burial benefit, daily hospital income, and fire assistance benefit.

The members of Pasang Masda BK JODA were deeply grateful for the health security provided. “Higit sa lahat nagpapasalamat ako sa itaas. Kahit ganito kahirap ang buhay namin, awa ng Diyos, nabiyayaan kami ng insurance na magsisigurado ng kalusugan ko at magpapaibsan ng pangamba ng aking pamilya. Ito ang pinaka the best na pinanghahawakan ko ngayon. Kahit ganito lang ang buhay namin, hindi kami pinababayaan [With God’s grace, we now enjoy an insurance benefit that assures my health will be maintained, thereby easing my family’s anxiety. We are not left unaided,” shared Alfredo Gonzales, Jr., member jeepney driver.
